Wrapping up 2017 at Blueberry Fields

As the summer of 2017 comes to an end, it’s time to put the garden to bed for the upcoming winter. Blueberry Fields was created because the Upper Oakville Shopping Centre wanted to create something to give back to those in need in the community, and so far, it has done just that. We initially launched the community garden in May of 2016, and we’ve come a long way in just our second year of planting and harvesting.

Ken and all of our hardworking volunteers worked their magic to provide the Home Suite Hope program families with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. A special thank you goes out to Ken himself and the various student volunteers that came out to help. We’d also like to thank Home Suite Hope’s corporate sponsors, Canadian Tire Financial & Genworth Canada for your assistance and support with this initiative.

This year, we produced and delivered boxes and boxes of fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs to the Home Suite Hopes families. Here’s just some of what was provided:

  • Over 100 kilograms of potatoes
  • Over 50 kilograms of zucchini
  • Over 12 dozen ears of corn
  • 2 dozen heads of broccoli
  • Multiple bushels of Brussel sprouts
  • Lots and lots of fresh tomatoes
  • 3 dozen eggplants
  • And much, much more

While the garden is officially put to bed for the season, there are still a limited number of herbs and eggplants growing even with this colder weather. This proved to be another successful year for our community garden and we believe we can keep improving year after year. While we will strive to improve Blueberry Fields Community Garden in 2018, we know that we will need more volunteers willing to devote their time to a great cause. If you have any interest in helping in any way next year, we encourage you to sign up at https://www.blueberryfields.ca/. Stay warm this winter, and we’ll see you next Spring!
