7 years and going strong

It’s hard to believe this is the 7th season for Blueberry Fields Community Garden. The garden has evolved but the concept and core values are the same. The purpose of the garden is to provide fresh, pesticide free produce to less fortunate people in our community. The produce is delivered to Kerr Street Mission for preparation and distribution. The goal of 200 kilograms of potatoes was exceeded, by 30 kgs! The potatoes alone, equal 507 lbs. or a quarter ton.

We owe a huge debt of graditude to the owners of Upper Oakville Shopping Centre. Without their generousity, Blueberry Fields would not be possible. Thank-you to Ken Stockstill, our site superintendent for his hard work and dedication. Ruth and Kim, our volunteer coordinators and the army of volunteers who donate their time and energy. Without their extraordinary efforts, there would be no garden.

The garden is not without challenges. We are at the mercy of the weather, resident rabbits, skunks and other wildlife – this year we have also been faced with theives who left with 2 of our biggest pumpkins, one of which had been earmarked for our youngest volunteer, a girl from Ukraine.

The garden has also attracted a local, amatueur bee keeper and her beehive.
