June 2018 at Blueberry Fields Community Garden

It’s the end of June and the garden is blooming! Thanks to Ken and our groups of volunteers with green thumbs, it looks like this year will yield a rich harvest.

Ken and our helpful volunteers have planted a wide variety of fruits and veggies including:

  • White & Red Potatoes
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Romaine, Boston Bib, and Leaf Lettuce
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Sweet Peppers
  • Hot Peppers
  • Beets
  • Bok Choy
  • Carrots
  • Eggplant
  • Summer Squash (Yellow Zucchini)
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Beans
  • Various types of Tomatoes
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Cucumbers
  • Parsley
  • Dill
  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme

We’ve had some great groups of volunteers come out and help with the garden this year. In late May, Home Suite Hope was chosen by four grade-six students from MacLaughlan College who were doing a school project on homelessness. These students interviewed the Home Suite Hope team and spent their time volunteering at Blueberry Fields Community Garden! They helped with the planting of lettuce, beets and beans which will be distributed to various Home Suite Hope program families this summer.

We also had groups of volunteers from Home Suite Hope’s community partners, Adults in Motion Halton and Starbucks Canada volunteer at Blueberry Fields midway through June. These volunteers spent the day at the garden planting, weeding, and watering.

A special thank you to everyone who spent their time helping out so far this year. All help is appreciated – each and every volunteer helps us bring more fresh foods to Home Suite Hope program families. To view the latest photos from the garden, click here.

We also have some exciting news to share! On June 21st, Home Suite Hope held their 2018 General Meeting & Volunteer Appreciation Event. We’re happy to announce that Ken was awarded the 2018 Top Programs Volunteer for his hard work with Blueberry Fields!

For anyone interested in helping out we are always looking for volunteers. For more information or to book a time to volunteer, sign up at blueberry fields, email info@oakvilleshops.com or call/text Ken at 416 991 1442.
